Short Bio
Stefano RUFFO is senior associate researcher at the Institute for Complex Systems of CNR Sesto Fiorentino (Italy) since 2024.
He has been full professor of condensed matter physics at SISSA Trieste (Italy) from 2015 to 2024;
Director of SISSA for the term 2015-2021.
He has been an assistant professor at the Universities of Pisa and Florence and an associate professor at the University of Basilicata and at the University of Florence.
He has been full professor of condensed matter physics at the University of Florence from 2011 to 2015.
His research fields are statistical and nonlinear physics and complex systems.
He has been visiting scientist at Oxford University, CPT-CNRS Marseille, Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, Ecole Normale Superieure Lyon, University of California at Berkeley, Kyoto University. He has been Weston Visiting Professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science (2010-2011) and Excellence Chair at the Physics Laboratory of the Ecole Normale Superieure in Lyon (2011-2013).
He has been the Chairman of the C3 Commission (Statistical Physics) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and Vice-President of the IUPAP for the triennium 2012-2014.
He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Erwin Schroedinger Institute in Vienna (2016-21) and of the board of the Statistical & Nonlinear Physics Division of the European Physical Society (2016-22).
He has been the Chairman of StatPhys29 in Florence 13-18 july 2025.
He is the President of the Scientific Committee of GSSI L’Aquila (2025-2027) and an external member of the Administrative Council of the University of Palermo (2025-2027).
Research interests
Equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of classical and quantum systems with long-range interactions. Relaxation to equilibrium in nonlinear coupled oscillators.
